Using UK English Dictionary in Windows Live Mail Desktop

Saturday, June 16, 2007 10:26 PM

Steve Clayton blogged about how to get a UK English dictionary working for Windows Live Writer, however this trick doesn't work for Windows Live Mail Desktop. If you have Microsoft Office though, you can get the UK English, and any other installed dictionaries working.

  1. Copy all the files from

    %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\microsoft shared\Proof

    to

    %ProgramFiles%\Windows Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\2

  2. Edit the file %ProgramFiles%\Windows Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\spell.ini. Change

    Lang=1033

    to

    Lang=2057

  3. Restart Windows Live Mail and your dictionary should now be in English (UK). You can also switch to any other dictionaries installed with Office in Tools / Options / Dictionaries.

    Thanks, I'm glad that English has not been abondoned by everyone. I'm in my 30s and I often feel I learnt a different language at school to those even a few years younger than me. I'm with John Cleese [http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blrevocation_cleese.htm] why can't our American buddies refer to that which they speak as "American" and give us back our billion!

    Thanks again

    Works well although when you go in to Windows Live Mail options it still says that the English (United States) version is installed

    I followed the advice. Does seem to have changed the dictionary to British English, though Tools > Options > Spelling now shows just American English, and I've lost 4 alternative languages that were there before.

    HI - did all that but when I try to save the spell.ini file it tells me that it can´t create the file. If I try to just exit and it asks me if I want to save the file I get the same answer - any ideas? Brian

  9. Simon at 6/10/2008 9:16 PM wrote:

    Check to insure the spell.ini file is not read only and make sure live mail is not running. Windows task manager will be able to show you.

  10. Barry at 6/16/2008 9:59 PM wrote:

    Great tip. Thanks a lot for this.

    @Brian Sear - did you get it working? I had the same issue, but just went into Properties | Security (for the spell.ini file) and gave the "Users" the 'Full Control' rights.

  11. David at 9/26/2008 12:27 PM wrote:

    Thank you for this. It has been bugging me for weeks. Only thing I noticed was that in step 2, my spell.ini is in folder 2 - so %ProgramFiles%\Windows Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\2\spell.ini

    But a perfect solution (and yes I did have to follow Barry's advice as well).

    Had that same problem and instead just save-ased a copy to desktop, closed live mail and then cut-paste-replaced it into the original folder, just another way of doing it.

    Nice one, finally I can write words like colour without red underlines. Seems to think minimize is a valid word though. Is it? I cant find out as even google.co.uk changes the search term 'minimize vs minimise'
    to
    'Did you mean: minimize vs minimize'.

    It wont be long before they teach the wrong spellings in school just because pc's are so biased. Half the software doesnt even offer English(British) as its called.

    I found the instructions easy to follow, but of course you have to drill down to get the right files.Incidentally words like 'organise' can be spelt as 'organize' quite correctly in UK English. Fowler thinks the 'z' version is preferable.

    I have vista and recently installed Windows live. The choice is now so easy.

    Tools - Options - Spelling - Languages.

    It works.

    I tried the first solution but it never worked, I got the low network connectivity message. I tried the compatibility method but that also failed. I then uninstalled the windows updates that I installed today and after rebooting, the client worked again. I suspect that the update that caused the client to stop working is KB950759 which is a security update for IE7 in vista although I am yet to try re-installing them.
